Can You Vape on a Train?

No. All major UK train operators ban vaping on trains, in carriages, in toilets and at most platforms and stations. Here is what the rules are, what the consequences are and the best alternatives for your journey.

No, you cannot vape on a train in the UK. All major rail operators including National Rail, Avanti West Coast, LNER, TransPennine Express, Northern Rail and all others prohibit vaping on their trains and at their stations. Although vaping does not fall under the Health Act 2006 smoking ban, every significant UK rail operator has chosen to extend their no-smoking policy to cover e-cigarettes as well. The ban applies in carriages, train toilets and typically at station platforms and inside station buildings. Carrying your vape with you is fine; using it on the train is not.

Why Vaping Is Banned on UK Trains

The 2007 smoking ban under the Health Act 2006 made it illegal to smoke tobacco on public transport. When e-cigarettes became widespread in the 2010s, UK train operators faced a choice about how to treat them. They chose, broadly, to apply the same no-smoking policy to vaping for several practical and comfort-based reasons.

Firstly, the visible vapour from an e-cigarette can alarm or disturb other passengers who may not be familiar with the difference between vapour and smoke. Secondly, some passengers are sensitive to the chemicals in vape aerosol regardless of its reduced risk profile compared to cigarette smoke. Thirdly, and most practically, applying the same rule to both tobacco and vaping products removes all ambiguity for both passengers and staff, making the policy easier to communicate and enforce.

Northern Rail's publicly stated rationale is clear: they do not allow electronic cigarettes to be used at any of their stations or on any of their services for the comfort of other passengers.

UK Rail Operators That Ban Vaping

National Rail network

No vaping on any National Rail service or at any Network Rail managed station. This covers the entire national rail network.

Avanti West Coast

Both smoking and e-cigarettes are prohibited on any Avanti train or operating platform.

LNER

No vaping on trains or at stations. LNER aligns its e-cigarette policy with its smoking policy across all services.

TransPennine Express

Blanket ban on e-cigarette use on trains and at stations. No exceptions for any type of vaping device.

Northern Rail

Explicitly states no electronic cigarettes at any of their stations or on any of their services. One of the earliest operators to formalise the policy.

Transport for London

No vaping on the London Underground, London Overground, Elizabeth line, buses, trams or at any TfL-managed station.

Eurostar

All Eurostar trains prohibit vaping. The policy applies throughout the journey including while stationary in stations.

All other operators

Without exception, every major UK rail operator has adopted the same position. If in doubt, assume vaping is prohibited.

What Happens If You Vape on a Train?

If a member of train staff sees you vaping, at minimum you will receive a verbal request to stop. Most operators will also issue a formal warning. If you refuse to comply or continue vaping after being warned, you may be removed from the train at the next station. In some circumstances, particularly if you are abusive or uncooperative, the British Transport Police can be involved. Vaping on a train may also result in being banned from future travel with that operator. The consequences are broadly similar to those for smoking on a train.

All operators

Every major UK rail operator prohibits vaping on trains and at most stations

Not illegal

Vaping on a train is not a criminal offence under the Health Act 2006 but violates every operator's terms of carriage

Outside station

Step outside the station building and away from entrances to vape before boarding or after arriving

Can You Vape on a Train Platform?

In most cases, no. Most UK rail operators extend their no-vaping policy to station platforms as well as the trains themselves, including both covered and open-air platforms. Enclosed station buildings and waiting rooms are consistently covered. Some open-air platforms at smaller or rural stations may have less rigorous enforcement, but the policy of the operator typically still prohibits it. The safest approach is to step outside the station entirely and away from entrances before vaping. Many stations have a designated smoking area outside the building where vaping is also permitted.

What to Use Instead During Your Journey

Nicotine pouches

The ideal train journey alternative. Place one under your upper lip at the start of your journey. No vapour, no odour, no device and no visible use. Completely discreet and usable on any train at any time.

Nicotine patches

Apply before you board. Slow-release transdermal delivery means continuous low-level nicotine throughout a longer journey without any need to use a device.

Nicotine gum

Widely used and entirely acceptable on trains. Chew as needed during your journey. No restrictions apply to nicotine gum on any UK rail service.

Vape before boarding

Step outside the station, away from entrances, and use your vape before boarding. Most journeys are short enough that the break before and after arrival is manageable.

You are permitted to carry your vape device with you on a train. The rules apply to using the device on the train, not to transporting it. Keep your vape switched off and in your bag or pocket during the journey. You can use it once you have exited the station and are standing in an outdoor area away from entrances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is vaping on a train illegal?

Not in the criminal law sense. The Health Act 2006 smoking ban covers tobacco only and does not extend to e-cigarettes. However, vaping on a train violates every major UK operator's terms of carriage, which are contractual conditions of your ticket. Breaching these can result in being removed from the train and in some circumstances further action.

Can I vape on the London Underground?

No. Transport for London prohibits vaping on all Underground services, stations, platforms, buses, trams and all other TfL-managed services and premises. The policy applies to every TfL mode of transport and throughout every station.

Can I vape at a train station?

Usually not inside the station building or on the platforms. Most UK rail operators extend their no-vaping policy to station premises. You can typically vape outside the station entirely and away from station entrances. Some stations have a designated outdoor smoking area where vaping may also be permitted. Check signage or ask station staff.

Can I bring my vape on a train?

Yes. You can carry your vaping device, e-liquid and accessories with you on any UK train. The ban applies to using the device on the train, not to transporting it. Keep it in your bag and switched off during the journey.
