Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt?
A burnt taste from any vape — disposable, pod kit or mod — means the coil is heating dry cotton instead of e-liquid. The cotton scorches and releases that harsh, acrid flavour instead of smooth vapour. The cause is almost always one of five things, all of which are diagnosable in under a minute and fixable.
Every vape — whether a pod kit, box mod or prefilled device — works by using a battery to heat a coil that vaporises e-liquid soaked into a cotton wick. A burnt taste means the coil fired when the cotton was not adequately saturated with liquid. The cotton overheats, scorches and releases an acrid taste instead of flavourful vapour. There are five main reasons this happens: the e-liquid in the tank or pod is too low to cover the wicking ports; a new coil was not primed before first use; the coil has reached the end of its useful life; the wattage is set above the coil's rated range; or chain vaping is drawing faster than the wick can re-saturate. Each cause has a specific fix, and identifying which applies to your situation takes less than a minute using the diagnostic table below.
Quick Diagnostic: Find Your Cause
| Your situation | Most likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Burnt from the very first puff on a new device or new coil | Unprimed coil — cotton is dry | Do not vape further. Add liquid to wick, fill tank, wait 15 minutes, take cold primer draws |
| Tank looks low or you have been vaping for hours without refilling | Low e-liquid — wicking ports exposed | Refill immediately. Never let liquid drop below the wicking port holes on the coil |
| Coil has been in use for 2 to 4 weeks, taste has gradually worsened | Worn-out coil — cotton degraded | Replace the coil. Prime new coil properly before first use |
| Taste only burns during rapid or back-to-back puffing | Chain vaping — wick starvation | Wait 15 to 20 seconds between draws to let the wick re-saturate |
| Device has adjustable power and wattage is set high | Wattage above coil's rated range | Check the wattage range on the coil and reduce power to within it |
| Just switched to a new e-liquid, burnt taste started immediately | Wrong VG/PG ratio — poor wicking | Switch to a lower-VG liquid suited to your device type |
| Using sweet or dessert flavours, gradual burnt-sugar taste | Sucralose caramelising on the coil | Coil needs replacing sooner than usual. Rotate lighter flavours to extend life |
| Disposable vape, burnt taste and battery LED still works | E-liquid exhausted — battery outlasted the liquid | Replace the device or pod. A working LED does not mean liquid remains |
The Five Fixes in Detail
1. Prime a new coil
A new coil contains completely dry cotton. If you install it and vape immediately the cotton scorches on first contact with heat — a mistake that ruins the coil before it has delivered a single clean puff and whose burnt flavour persists even after the wick saturates.
Add 3 to 5 drops of liquid directly to the cotton wicking ports. Fill the tank. Wait 10 to 15 minutes. Take 3 to 5 cold draws (no power) to pull liquid through. Start at low wattage for your first few puffs.2. Refill the tank or pod
When liquid falls below the wicking port holes on the coil, air enters the wick instead of liquid. The fix is simple — refill before it reaches this point. The general rule: refill when the tank reaches a quarter full. Never vape a tank to completely empty.
Refill immediately. If you have been vaping dry cotton for several puffs, let the newly filled device sit for 5 minutes before vaping again to allow the wick to re-saturate fully.3. Replace the coil
Coils have a finite lifespan. Signs the coil needs replacing: muted or flat flavour that has gradually worsened over days, a persistent low-level burnt taste regardless of liquid level, or visible discolouration on the coil. No amount of additional liquid or lower wattage will restore a fully degraded coil.
Replace the coil and prime the new one properly before first use. Typical coil life: 1 to 4 weeks depending on usage intensity and e-liquid sweetener content.4. Slow down between puffs
Chain vaping draws faster than the wick can absorb replacement liquid from the tank. The cotton partially dries between puffs taken in rapid succession and the coil fires on damp-to-dry rather than fully saturated cotton. This is most common in small pod devices with limited wick surface area.
Wait at least 15 to 20 seconds between puffs. Take slower, more deliberate draws rather than rapid, hard inhales. Put the device down between uses rather than holding it.5. Reduce wattage
Every coil has a rated wattage range. Operating above this generates more heat than the coil can handle, vaporising liquid faster than the wick can replace it and overheating the cotton even when the tank is full. The wattage range is printed on every replacement coil and in the device documentation.
Check the wattage range on your coil head and set your device within it. If you do not know the range, start at 15W to 20W and increase gradually. Sub-ohm coils typically operate at 30W to 80W; MTL pod coils at 10W to 20W.Every burnt vape taste has the same root cause — the coil heating dry or partially dry cotton rather than fully saturated wick — the five different triggers all lead to the same mechanism
Once cotton has genuinely scorched, adding more liquid will not remove the taste — if priming or refilling does not fix it within a few puffs, the coil needs replacing
Priming new coils, keeping the tank topped up and pausing between puffs eliminates almost all burnt taste — habits that cost no money and take minimal time
How to Prevent Burnt Taste: Good Habits
- Always prime a new coil — add drops to the cotton, fill the tank and wait 10 to 15 minutes before first use. This single habit prevents the most common and most frustrating cause of burnt taste.
- Refill the tank when it reaches a quarter full. Do not wait for the burnt taste to tell you the liquid is low.
- Replace coils proactively before they fully degrade. Flavour starts declining before the burnt taste appears — change the coil at first signs of muted or slightly off flavour.
- Take measured draws with 15 to 20 second gaps. Put the device down between sessions rather than keeping it in hand.
- Stay within the coil's rated wattage range — start at the lower end and adjust upward to taste.
- Use e-liquids with the correct VG/PG ratio for your device. Pod kits need 50/50 or nic salts; sub-ohm tanks need 70/30 or higher VG.
- Rotate lighter flavours (menthol, tobacco, unflavoured fruit) periodically to slow the rate of coil gunking from sweet e-liquids.
A burnt vape is the single most common reason people give for having a negative vaping experience — and it is almost entirely preventable. The underlying mechanism is always the same: coil heating dry cotton. Understanding this makes every burnt-taste situation diagnosable. If the liquid is full and the coil is new: it was not primed. If the coil is old: it needs replacing. If it only happens when you vape rapidly: slow down. If the wattage is high: reduce it. None of these require new hardware or technical skill — they are habits and awareness.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it harmful to vape a burnt coil?
An occasional accidental burnt hit is unpleasant but not acutely harmful. Repeatedly vaping a burnt coil exposes you to overheated wick material, degraded e-liquid compounds and potentially metallic particles from a degrading coil mesh — none of which are present in vapour from a functioning coil. If your vape consistently tastes burnt, replace the coil rather than continuing to use it in a degraded state.
My vape suddenly started tasting burnt — what changed?
A sudden onset of burnt taste after a period of normal use is almost always one of three things: the e-liquid level has just dropped below the wicking ports, the coil has just passed its lifespan threshold, or you have been vaping more heavily than usual in a session (chain vaping). Check the liquid level first — it is the fastest diagnosis. If the tank is reasonably full, the coil is likely due for replacement.
Can I use a coil after it tastes burnt?
If the burnt taste was caused by a brief dry hit from the tank running low or chain vaping — not full scorching — then refilling and waiting for re-saturation may restore reasonable flavour. If the cotton has genuinely scorched (you will often see or smell this), the coil will continue to taste burnt regardless of liquid level. Once cotton burns the flavour compounds embed in the fibres permanently. Replace it rather than continuing to vape through it.
