How to Prime a Vape Coil

Drop 3 to 5 drops of e-liquid onto the visible cotton wicking ports, install the coil, fill the tank, wait 5 to 10 minutes, take a few dry puffs without pressing the fire button, then start vaping at the lowest recommended wattage. Never fire a dry coil.

Priming a vape coil means saturating the cotton wick with e-liquid before the first use. A new coil arrives completely dry. If you fire it before the cotton is soaked, the heat instantly scorches the dry cotton — producing a harsh burnt taste and permanently damaging the coil before it has even properly started. Priming takes two to three minutes and can be the difference between a coil lasting one day and one lasting two weeks. Apply drops of e-liquid to the visible cotton ports, fill the tank, wait at least five minutes, take a few dry puffs, then start at the lowest wattage in the coil's recommended range and build up gradually.

Why Priming Matters: What Happens Inside a Coil

Every replaceable coil contains a metal wire (usually Kanthal, stainless steel or mesh) wrapped around or woven through a cotton wick. The cotton absorbs e-liquid from the tank through small wicking ports visible on the outside of the coil body. When you fire the device, the wire heats rapidly. If the cotton around the wire is saturated with liquid, the liquid vaporises — producing vapour and flavour. If the cotton is dry, the heat scorches the cotton fibres directly, producing a harsh acrid taste and charring the wick permanently.

Once cotton has been scorched, the burnt taste cannot be removed. The charred material contaminates every subsequent puff from that coil. Priming prevents this by ensuring the cotton is fully saturated from the very first draw.

How to Prime: By Device Type

Sub-ohm tanks and refillable tanks with replaceable coils

  1. Remove the new coil from its packaging and locate the cotton wicking ports — the small rectangular or circular holes on the outside of the coil body where white cotton is visible
  2. Apply 3 to 5 drops of your e-liquid directly onto each cotton port. Add one drop at a time and allow each drop to absorb before adding the next. The cotton should look visibly wet but not waterlogged
  3. Add 1 to 2 drops down through the top opening of the coil (the centre hole) to wet the cotton from inside
  4. Install the coil into the base of the tank
  5. Reassemble the tank and fill with e-liquid. The liquid filling from above will continue to saturate the cotton through the wicking ports
  6. Leave the filled tank standing upright for 5 to 10 minutes without vaping. Sub-ohm coils with more cotton require the longer end of this range
  7. Take 3 to 5 dry puffs — draw on the mouthpiece without pressing the fire button. This draws additional e-liquid into the cotton through capillary action
  8. Start vaping at the lowest wattage in the coil's recommended range (printed on the coil). Take 5 to 10 puffs at this low setting before gradually increasing to your preferred wattage

Refillable pod kits with integrated pod-coils

  1. Fill the pod with your e-liquid through the fill port
  2. Insert the pod into the device but do not fire it yet
  3. Leave the filled pod standing upright for 5 to 8 minutes. The cotton in the integrated coil will absorb e-liquid through the wicking channels
  4. Take 3 to 5 dry puffs without pressing any button or triggering the draw-activated sensor. This aids initial wick saturation
  5. Begin vaping gently with short puffs for the first few draws before using your normal draw length
  6. Note: with most pod-coil designs you cannot drip directly onto the cotton as the coil is sealed inside the pod. The waiting and dry-puff steps are especially important for this device type

Full Step-by-Step Guide (Universal)

  1. Identify the cotton wicking ports on the new coil. These look like small white circles or rectangles on the outside of the coil body — 2 to 4 ports are typical. On mesh coils, there may be a single larger wicking area visible at the base.
  2. Apply 3 to 5 drops of your chosen e-liquid directly to each cotton port. Let each drop absorb fully before adding the next — dripping too quickly causes pooling without absorption. The cotton should darken noticeably as it absorbs the liquid.
  3. Add 1 to 2 drops down through the centre of the coil (the hollow top opening) to saturate the cotton from the inside as well as the outside.
  4. Install the primed coil into the tank base and fill the tank to the maximum fill line. Cap the tank and allow it to stand upright for a minimum of 5 minutes — 10 minutes for sub-ohm coils with more cotton mass.
  5. Take 3 to 5 dry puffs by drawing on the mouthpiece without activating the fire button. You should feel slight resistance and hear a faint gurgling as liquid is drawn into the wick. This is normal and expected.
  6. Set the device to the minimum wattage within the coil's recommended range. If the coil is rated 30 to 60W, start at 30W. Take 5 to 10 puffs at this setting before increasing.
  7. Gradually increase wattage in 5W increments, taking a few puffs at each level, until you reach your preferred setting. This break-in process fully beds the cotton and establishes optimal wicking before operating at full power.

3 to 5 drops

Lowest wattage first

Always start at the bottom of the coil's rated wattage range and increase gradually — firing at full power on a new coil shortens its life significantly

Tips for Making Coils Last Longer After Priming

Keep the tank above a quarter full

The wicking ports on the side of the coil must be covered by e-liquid to maintain saturation. Once the liquid level drops below the ports, the exposed cotton begins to dry with each puff. Top up your tank before it reaches the quarter-full mark to prevent wick starvation between draws.

Avoid chain vaping

Taking rapid successive puffs does not allow the cotton time to re-absorb e-liquid between draws. Even a well-primed coil can experience dry hits when chain-vaped intensively. Leave 20 to 30 seconds between puffs during normal use, more during sustained long sessions.

Stay in the middle of the wattage range

Vaping consistently at or near the maximum of the coil's rated range accelerates cotton and wire degradation. Using the middle third of the recommended range produces good vapour and flavour while extending coil life significantly. Save higher wattages for occasional use rather than continuous operation.

Choose lower-sweetener e-liquids

Heavily sweetened dessert and candy e-liquids contain sucralose that caramelises on the coil at operating temperature, building up as a dark gunk that blocks wicking ports and degrades flavour. Simple tobacco, menthol and unsweetened fruit e-liquids are dramatically kinder to coils, often doubling effective coil life compared to heavy dessert liquids.

Replace at the first sign of fading flavour

The correct time to change a coil is when you notice flavour becoming noticeably flatter or duller — not when you first taste burning. By the time a burnt taste arrives, the cotton has already been charring gradually for days. Replacing at the flavour-fade stage gives you consistently better taste throughout each coil's life.

Clean the tank when changing coils

When fitting a new coil, rinse the tank with warm water, shake dry and leave to air for 30 minutes before refilling. Old e-liquid residue and darkened liquid from the previous coil's session will contaminate the new coil immediately if left in the tank, shortening its life from the first use.

Mesh coils require more patience during priming than traditional wire coils because they contain more cotton across a larger surface area. The standard advice of 5 minutes waiting time applies to wire coils — mesh coils benefit from a full 10 minute soak and additional dry puffs before the first real draw. If you are using a mesh coil for the first time and still getting a slightly burnt or cotton taste on the first few puffs, the cotton is simply not yet fully saturated. Continue with dry puffs and wait a further 5 minutes rather than continuing to vape through the residual cotton taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to prime a coil if I am using a pod kit?

Yes, although the method is simpler than for a tank with a replaceable coil. For most pod kits with integrated pod-coils, you fill the pod and wait 5 to 10 minutes before the first draw. You cannot drip directly onto the cotton as you can with a separate replaceable coil, but the waiting and dry-puff steps serve the same purpose. Skipping this wait on a pod kit is just as likely to produce a burnt first puff as skipping priming on a tank coil.

What happens if you vape without priming?

If you fire a completely dry coil, the cotton surrounding the wire will scorch on the first or second draw. This produces an immediate harsh burnt taste and permanently damages the coil. A scorched coil cannot be recovered — the charred cotton contaminates every subsequent puff. The coil must be discarded and replaced. A coil that retails for two to four pounds is wasted in under a second of impatient vaping.

My new coil still tastes burnt after priming — what happened?

The most common causes are insufficient waiting time (especially with larger sub-ohm coils), starting at too high a wattage before the break-in period, or a genuinely defective coil from the pack. If you are certain you primed correctly with a full 10-minute soak and dry puffs, and started at minimum recommended wattage, try the next coil from the same pack. Defective coils are rare but do occur. If multiple coils from the same pack fail immediately despite correct priming, the coils may be counterfeit or the pack may have been stored in poor conditions.

How long should I wait before the first puff?

A minimum of 5 minutes for standard replaceable coils after filling the tank. Mesh coils with more cotton benefit from 10 minutes. Some experienced vapers wait 15 to 20 minutes for very large sub-ohm coils. The waiting time allows e-liquid to fully penetrate the cotton from all wicking ports through passive capillary absorption. The dry puffs after waiting speed this process by drawing liquid actively into the wick.
