Why Is My Vape Lighting Up But Not Hitting?
A vape that lights up but produces no vapour or draw resistance is activating electrically but failing to vaporise liquid. The LED working confirms the battery has charge — the problem is between the battery and the vapour output. Six common causes all have clear fixes, most taking under two minutes.
When a vape's LED activates but produces no vapour or sensation when you draw, the battery is receiving the draw signal and responding — but the vaporisation stage is not completing. This is different from a device that does nothing at all when you draw (which typically means a battery or connection issue). Lighting up but not hitting means the sensor is working but one of the following is preventing vapour production: the coil is flooded with excess liquid and cannot vaporise; the coil is fully dry because the liquid has run out; the coil is burnt out and no longer functions; there is a blockage in the airflow path; or the coil is not making proper electrical contact with the battery. A device that lights up but does not hit is almost always recoverable.
Causes and Fixes: Work Through These in Order
1. Flooded coil — most common cause
If you can draw air through the device but get a bubbling or gurgling sensation with no vapour, the coil chamber is flooded with excess liquid. The LED activates, the device fires, but instead of vaporising liquid from the wick, it is trying to heat liquid that has pooled around the element — and the vapour that forms gets absorbed back into the surrounding liquid before it reaches the mouthpiece. A flooded device lights up, makes a sound but produces little or no draw and no visible vapour.
Fix: Remove the pod, gently blow through the mouthpiece with a tissue below to expel pooled liquid. Use a dry cotton bud to clear the air channel. Briefly fire the device without drawing to vaporise residual liquid. Reassemble and try gentle draws to confirm the flood has cleared.2. E-liquid completely exhausted
A device that has run out of liquid will fire — the LED activates, the coil heats — but produces no vapour because there is nothing to vaporise. The coil heats dry cotton, which may produce a faint burnt smell but no visible vapour or satisfying draw. Many devices, particularly disposable-style pods, have batteries that outlast the liquid by several hundred puffs — the LED working is not confirmation that liquid remains.
Fix: Refill the pod or tank with fresh e-liquid. If it is a sealed pre-filled pod system where the pod is not refillable, replace the pod. Stand the device upright for 5 minutes after refilling before vaping to allow the coil to re-saturate.3. Coil not making electrical contact
A pod or coil that is not seated correctly — slightly loose, tilted or with dirty contacts — may light the LED but fail to complete the circuit needed to heat the coil. The device's sensor detects the draw, activates the LED, but the heating element receives insufficient or no current. This is particularly common after refilling, cleaning or dropping the device.
Fix: Remove the pod or coil completely. Inspect the contacts on both the device and the pod for liquid residue or debris and clean with a dry cotton bud. Firmly reseat the pod — feel or hear the click. If the coil is a screw-type in a tank, ensure it is threaded correctly and finger-tight.4. Airflow blocked
Blocked airflow — from a piece of debris, a pocket of solidified e-liquid residue, or a manufacturing fault — prevents you from drawing through the device normally. The device activates but you cannot pull vapour through because the air path is obstructed. You may notice unusually strong resistance when drawing, or feel that no air moves through the device at all despite the LED firing.
Fix: Check the mouthpiece for visible blockage. Use a cocktail stick or thin implement to gently clear any debris from the mouthpiece opening. Blow sharply through the base of the device (battery end, pod removed) to clear any loose obstruction from the air channel. Check the airflow adjustor ring on adjustable-airflow devices is open rather than closed.5. Worn-out or dead coil
A coil that has fully failed — burnt out, shorted internally, or degraded to the point of non-function — may still allow the device to activate its LED while producing no heat or vapour. The battery fires successfully, but the coil does not generate heat. This is more common with very old coils and with coils that have experienced a significant dry-fire event.
Fix: Replace the coil. Prime the new coil properly before first use. If the new coil resolves the issue, the old coil had failed. Keep a spare coil available so you are not left without a working device when this happens.6. Battery nearly depleted — giving false LED signals
Most vaping devices have a low-battery indicator — often a different colour LED flash or a rapid blink pattern. However, some devices' LEDs remain active at very low charge levels even when there is insufficient voltage left to heat the coil. The light activates but the coil receives too little power to produce meaningful heat or vapour. This can mimic other faults.
Fix: Charge the device fully via USB-C for the recommended time before concluding there is another fault. If charging resolves the issue, battery depletion was the cause. If the device remains unresponsive after a full charge, move on to the other causes above.Systematic Troubleshooting: Work Through This Order
Charge the device
Before anything else, plug in for 30 minutes. A near-depleted battery mimics several other faults. Eliminate this before spending time on other diagnostics.
Check the e-liquid level
Look through the pod window or check by weight. If the pod feels notably lighter than when new, the liquid may be exhausted. Refill or replace before proceeding.
Remove and reseat the pod or coil
Take the pod out, clean contacts with a dry cotton bud, check for visible liquid or debris on both connection points and reinsert firmly.
Clear any flood or airflow blockage
Blow gently through the mouthpiece into a tissue. Check the airflow slots and mouthpiece opening for debris. Briefly fire without drawing to vaporise any pooled liquid.
Replace the coil
If all other steps fail, the coil has likely failed. Install a new coil, prime it properly and test. This resolves the issue in the majority of cases that survive the earlier steps.
A lighting LED confirms the battery has charge and the draw sensor is working — the problem is in the coil, connection or airflow, not the battery itself
A near-depleted battery can mimic several other faults — always charge fully before spending time on other diagnostics
Most lighting-but-not-hitting issues resolve at step one, two or three — the systematic approach saves time and avoids unnecessary coil replacements
A vape that lights up but does not hit is almost always recoverable without purchasing a new device. The LED confirming battery activity narrows the fault to the coil, connection or airflow rather than the battery or electronics. Working through the six causes in order — charge, liquid level, connection, flood/airflow, coil replacement — resolves the issue for the vast majority of vapers. If all six steps fail to restore function, the device may have an internal electronics fault and may need replacing, but this represents a small minority of cases.

Frequently Asked Questions
My vape flashes a certain number of times when I draw — what does this mean?
LED flash patterns are device-specific signals. Common patterns include: three to five rapid flashes indicating low battery; ten rapid flashes indicating a short circuit or coil incompatibility; flashing while drawing but no vapour indicating a connection issue. Check your specific device's manual or the manufacturer's website for the LED code list — these patterns vary significantly between brands and models. Purple Haze MK can help interpret LED signals for devices purchased in store.
My new pod lights up but does not produce vapour — is it faulty?
A brand-new pod that lights up but does not hit is most commonly either not fully seated (remove and reinsert firmly) or has an air bubble preventing liquid from reaching the coil (tap the base gently, stand upright for 10 minutes). If the pod is a pre-filled unit, the cotton may need time to fully absorb the pre-loaded liquid. Take two to three cold draws without firing before your first proper puff. If none of these work, the pod may be faulty — return it to the retailer.
My draw-activated vape lights up only sometimes — what is happening?
Intermittent activation on a draw-activated device usually means the draw sensor — which detects airflow and triggers the battery — is partially blocked or its sensitivity threshold is not being met. Clean the airflow sensor area (usually near the base of the pod or the air inlet) with a dry cotton bud. Ensure the airflow slots are not blocked by debris or a phone case pressing against them. Take a slightly firmer draw to ensure the sensor threshold is reached consistently.
