Why Is My Vape Not Working?

The first step to fixing a non-working vape is identifying what it is actually doing — or not doing. A completely dead vape (no light, no response) has different causes from one that lights up but produces nothing. Most vape problems are caused by flat battery, a locked device, a loose connection or a coil issue and are resolved without any replacement parts.

A non-working vape almost always falls into one of two categories: completely unresponsive (no LED, no sensation, no response to draw or button press) or partially working (LED activates but no vapour produced). Each category has its own set of causes and a different starting point for diagnosis. Completely unresponsive devices almost always have a flat battery, an engaged safety lock or a disconnected coil or pod. Devices that activate but produce no vapour have a coil, liquid level, connection or airflow issue. In both cases, the most likely cause in the UK market in 2026 is either a flat battery or an empty pod — both resolved in under five minutes.

Start Here: Which Category Is Your Problem?

Completely dead — no response at all

No LED, no sensation, nothing happens when you draw or press the button. The device appears to have no power whatsoever.

Most likely causes:

  • Battery is flat — charge it
  • Safety lock is engaged — unlock it
  • Pod or coil is not seated — remove and reseat
  • Battery contacts are dirty — clean with dry cotton bud
  • Charging cable or port is faulty — try different cable
  • Battery has failed — device needs replacing

Lights up but no vapour

LED activates when you draw. The device responds but produces no vapour or very weak vapour with no sensation.

Most likely causes:

  • E-liquid exhausted — refill or replace pod
  • Coil flooded — clear the flood
  • Coil not making contact — remove and reseat
  • Airflow blocked — clear the mouthpiece and air channel
  • Coil worn out or failed — replace the coil
  • Battery nearly flat — charge before other diagnostics

Fixes for a Completely Unresponsive Vape

Charge the battery fully

Connect to a known-working USB-C cable and charger. Wait 30 to 60 minutes before testing. Many devices show no response at all — not even a low-battery indicator — when completely depleted. A flat battery is responsible for the majority of "dead vape" reports.

Disengage the safety lock

Most button-activated vapes have a safety lock activated by clicking the fire button five times rapidly. If your device was accidentally locked in a pocket or bag, five rapid clicks will unlock it. Draw-activated devices typically do not have a manual lock — if yours has no response it is more likely a battery or connection issue.

Remove and reseat the pod or coil

A pod not fully clicked into place breaks the electrical circuit even if it appears inserted. Remove completely, inspect both connection points for debris or liquid residue, clean with a dry cotton bud, and reinsert firmly until you feel or hear the click.

Clean the battery contacts

E-liquid residue on battery contacts creates a layer of insulation that prevents current flow. Use a dry cotton bud to clean the gold or silver contacts at the base of the pod socket and on the pod itself. Isopropyl alcohol on the bud can help with stubborn residue — ensure it is fully dry before reinserting the pod.

Try a different charging cable

A faulty USB-C cable is a common cause of a vape that will not charge and therefore appears completely dead. Test with a known-working cable from another device. Also check the charging port on the vape itself for debris or liquid — a blocked port will not charge even with a good cable.

Check for safety protection activation

Regulated vapes have built-in protections that cut power when: a short circuit is detected (often a coil seated incorrectly); the device overheats; or the battery voltage drops below minimum. The device typically indicates this with a specific LED pattern. Seating the coil correctly or allowing the device to cool usually resolves these protection activations.

Flat battery — most common

A completely depleted battery is the single most common cause of a vape appearing dead — charge for at least 30 minutes before any other diagnostics

5 clicks to unlock

Most button-activated vapes lock with five rapid clicks — if your device suddenly stops responding after being in a pocket or bag, try five rapid clicks to unlock

Identify the category first

Knowing whether your vape is completely dead or lighting-but-not-hitting narrows the cause dramatically and saves time on the wrong diagnostics

Device-Specific Tips for Common UK Pod Kits

  • Vaporesso XROS series: Five clicks to lock or unlock. If the device shows a red LED on draw, the battery is low. If it flashes eight times, a short circuit is detected — remove and reseat the pod.
  • OXVA XLIM series: Check the pod is correctly seated by removing and reseating with firm pressure. The XLIM uses a magnetic connection that can appear seated while still being slightly off-axis.
  • Lost Mary BM/Tappo pod systems: Pre-filled pods sometimes need 30 seconds to prime after insertion before the first draw. If no vapour on first use, wait briefly and try again before concluding there is a fault.
  • VooPoo Drag series: Five clicks locks and unlocks. If the screen shows "Check Atomizer" or "No Atomizer," the coil or pod is not making contact — remove and refit.
  • GeekVape Aegis series: The Aegis has short-circuit protection that activates immediately if the coil is not properly seated. Remove, clean contacts and refit the coil if you see the protection indicator.

The vast majority of "my vape is not working" situations are caused by one of four things: flat battery, safety lock engaged, pod or coil not seated correctly, or empty e-liquid. Charging the device and reseating the pod resolves the issue for most vapers within two minutes. If neither works, cleaning the contacts is the next step. Coil replacement is the solution when all simpler fixes have been exhausted. If you have tried all of these and the device remains unresponsive after a full charge, the internal battery or electronics may have failed and the device may need replacing — come into Purple Haze MK for an in-person assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

My vape worked fine yesterday and is completely dead today — what happened?

Sudden complete non-response after normal previous use is almost always a flat battery — particularly if the device was not charged overnight. Vapes can deplete faster than expected with heavy use, and some devices do not give a visible low-battery warning before cutting out completely. Charge for at least 30 minutes and test. If the device does not respond to charging at all — no charging indicator light — try a different cable and check the charging port for blockages. If it still will not charge after these steps, the battery may have failed or the charging port may be damaged.

My vape got wet — will it still work?

Many current vaping devices have an IPX4 splash-proof or water-resistant rating — the GeekVape Aegis series is waterproof to IPX67. However most standard pod kits are not water-resistant. If a non-waterproof device gets wet, do not attempt to charge or use it immediately. Remove the pod, shake out any visible water, leave the device open in a warm dry location for 24 to 48 hours and test only after it is completely dry. Do not use heat sources like hair dryers — heat can damage the battery and electronics.

My vape is flashing a colour I do not recognise — what does it mean?

LED colour codes and flash patterns are specific to each device and manufacturer. Common patterns across most brands: red LED or low battery colour indicates charge needed; rapid ten flashes often indicates a short circuit or incompatible coil; three to five slow flashes may indicate the tank is empty. Consult the manual for your specific device or search the manufacturer's website using the model name and LED colour. Purple Haze MK staff can help identify fault codes for devices purchased in store.
