How to Open a Vape Juice Bottle
Press down firmly on the cap and twist anticlockwise. UK e-liquid bottles use child-resistant caps by law — simply twisting without pressing down will not work. If the cap spins freely, you are not pressing down hard enough.
All e-liquid bottles sold in the UK are legally required to have child-resistant caps under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016 and the Nicotine Inhaling Products regulations. These caps use a push-and-turn or squeeze-and-turn mechanism specifically designed to resist simple twisting. The number one reason vapers cannot open their bottle is attempting to twist without applying firm downward pressure first. Press the cap firmly down toward the bottle, then twist anticlockwise while maintaining that downward pressure. The cap should give slightly when correct pressure is applied and then unscrew.
Why Vape Juice Bottles Are Hard to Open
UK law requires all e-liquid bottles containing nicotine to be fitted with child-resistant closures. This requirement exists because nicotine e-liquid — especially at higher concentrations — is toxic if ingested or absorbed through the skin by a child. The child-resistant cap mechanism is a deliberate barrier that requires a two-step action (press and turn, or squeeze and turn) that small children find very difficult to replicate but that adults can do once they know the technique.
The caps are not faulty and they are not defective. They work exactly as intended. The challenge for new vapers is learning the technique — particularly the need for firm downward pressure before twisting, which is counter-intuitive for anyone used to standard screw-top bottles.
The Two Types of Child-Resistant Cap
Push-and-turn cap (most common)
- Hold the bottle firmly on a flat surface with one hand to stabilise it
- Place the palm of your other hand flat on top of the cap and press down firmly — more firmly than feels natural
- While maintaining that downward pressure, twist the cap anticlockwise (to the left)
- You should feel the cap engage and begin to unscrew after the first quarter turn
- Continue turning anticlockwise while maintaining pressure until the cap lifts away
- If the cap just spins without gripping, you are not pressing down hard enough — increase pressure and try again
Squeeze-and-turn cap (some brands)
- Grip the bottle firmly in one hand
- Using your other hand, grip the cap between your thumb and fingers and squeeze the sides of the cap inward firmly
- While maintaining the inward squeeze pressure on the sides, twist anticlockwise
- The squeezing action engages the internal mechanism that allows the cap to unscrew
- Release and remove the cap once it has fully disengaged
- If unsure which type you have, try push-and-turn first — it is the most common design for UK 10ml e-liquid bottles
Step-by-Step Guide for the Standard 10ml UK Bottle
- Dry the bottle and your hands thoroughly. Any moisture or e-liquid residue on the cap or your fingers will significantly reduce grip. Wipe the cap and your hands with a dry cloth or paper towel before attempting to open.
- Place the bottle upright on a stable, flat surface. Holding it in mid-air while opening increases the chance of dropping it and spilling e-liquid.
- Position the palm of your dominant hand flat on top of the cap. Do not grip the sides of the cap — use your palm to apply downward pressure across the full top of the cap.
- Press down firmly. The cap should compress slightly under proper pressure. This is what disengages the child-resistant mechanism and allows the cap to rotate.
- While maintaining firm downward pressure, slowly rotate the cap anticlockwise (turn it to the left as you look down at it). You should feel a click or slight drop as the mechanism engages.
- Continue turning anticlockwise while maintaining pressure until the cap is fully unscrewed. Lift the cap away from the bottle.
- If there is a foil tamper-evident seal under the cap, pierce it with the cap's built-in spike or carefully remove it before filling your device.
The single most important action — downward pressure must be applied before the cap will rotate. Twisting alone does not work on child-resistant caps.
The direction to turn — anticlockwise (to the left). Attempting to twist clockwise will tighten the cap further and increase resistance.
E-liquid residue on the cap is one of the most common causes of a cap that feels stuck — dry both cap and hands before attempting to open.
When Your Bottle Still Will Not Open: Troubleshooting
Cap is slippery — use better grip
A rubber washing-up glove, a jar opener rubber disc, a cloth or a folded piece of kitchen paper all significantly improve grip on a slippery cap. Dry the cap surface first with kitchen paper, then apply a grip aid. The combination of a dry surface and a rubber grip surface is usually enough to open even very stubborn caps without damage.
Cap is sticky — e-liquid has dried around the thread
If e-liquid has leaked or dripped around the neck and cap and dried, it can bond the cap to the bottle. Run the neck of the bottle (not the whole bottle) under warm water for 30 seconds to soften the dried e-liquid. Dry thoroughly, then apply firm downward pressure and twist. The warm water softens the residue without affecting the e-liquid inside.
Cap spins but will not come off
This specifically indicates insufficient downward pressure. The cap's teeth are not engaging because the cap is not being pressed down enough to lower into the engaged position. Place the bottle on a firm surface, apply maximum downward palm pressure, and twist. Most people who experience this problem need to press harder than feels comfortable before the mechanism engages.
Use rubber-tipped pliers for extreme cases
If a cap is genuinely immovable, rubber-tipped pliers or a strap wrench provide significant additional torque. Grip the cap body with the pliers (gently — not so hard as to crack the plastic) and apply the push-and-turn motion. Be careful not to crush the bottle body. If pliers fail and the cap appears defective, take the bottle back to the retailer for a replacement — vape shops are familiar with this issue.
Different Bottle Types and Their Opening Methods
10ml nicotine salt bottles
Standard UK 10ml e-liquid bottles. Push-and-turn child-resistant cap in almost all cases. The cap contains an inner nozzle for precise filling once the outer cap is removed. Remove the outer cap first, then use the nozzle to fill your pod or tank directly.
Shortfill bottles (50ml and 100ml)
Larger bottles sold without nicotine (nicotine shots are added separately). The outer cap uses the same push-and-turn mechanism. However, the inner nib or nozzle stopper must also be removed to add a nicotine shot or to pour. This inner stopper can sometimes require pliers or strong tweezers to lever out. It is a separate component from the child-resistant cap.
Dropper bottles (some CBD liquids)
CBD e-liquids and some specialist products use dropper-style bottles with a separate pipette inside the cap. The outer cap typically uses the same push-and-turn mechanism. Once opened, the pipette is used to draw and dispense the liquid. Do not squeeze the pipette bulb while the tip is submerged beyond the shoulder of the bottle or the liquid may overflow.
Already-opened bottles with stuck caps
After opening, if e-liquid gets onto the cap threads during filling it can dry and create significant resistance on the next opening. Always wipe the neck and cap threads with a dry cloth after filling and before replacing the cap. Store bottles upright to prevent liquid migrating into the cap threads between uses.

Child-resistant caps on e-liquid bottles are a legal safety requirement, not an inconvenience. Liquid nicotine is acutely toxic to children — even a small amount ingested or absorbed through skin can cause poisoning. If you have difficulty with child-resistant caps due to reduced hand strength or dexterity, speak to the retailer when purchasing. Some brands produce e-liquids in easier-to-open formats for accessibility, or the retailer can assist. Never remove or replace a child-resistant cap with an unsecured lid, particularly in a household with young children or pets.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my vape juice cap just spin and not open?
If the cap spins freely without unscrewing, you are not pressing down hard enough. Child-resistant push-and-turn caps require firm downward pressure before the internal teeth engage and allow rotation. Press the cap toward the bottle as firmly as you can with your palm, and maintain that pressure throughout the twist. Most people who experience spinning caps need to apply significantly more downward force than feels natural.
How do I open a shortfill e-liquid bottle?
Shortfill bottles use the same push-and-turn cap mechanism as 10ml bottles — press down and twist anticlockwise. Once the outer cap is off, there is usually an inner nib or stopper that seals the bottle opening. This inner stopper needs to be removed to add a nicotine shot. Use pliers or strong tweezers to grip and lever it out. The inner stopper is a separate component from the cap. After adding your nicotine shot, replace the inner stopper if you want a sealed bottle, or leave it out if you are filling directly.
Is it safe to use pliers to open a vape juice bottle?
Yes, provided you use rubber-tipped pliers and apply controlled pressure. Grip the outer cap body gently — enough to hold it firmly, not enough to crack the plastic — and apply the push-and-turn motion. Avoid gripping the bottle body itself with metal pliers as this can crack or deform the plastic. If the bottle still will not open with pliers, return it to the retailer as the cap may be defective.
What should I do if e-liquid spills when opening?
Wash hands immediately and thoroughly with soap and water. Nicotine e-liquid absorbs through skin. If liquid contacts eyes, flush with clean water for several minutes. Clean any spilled liquid from surfaces promptly — nicotine e-liquid can stain and the nicotine content means it is hazardous to children and pets who may come into contact with a contaminated surface. Store all e-liquid bottles out of reach of children regardless of whether they are open or sealed.
