How to Unburn a Vape

If the cotton is fully charred, there is no fix — the coil must be replaced. If the burn is mild or caused by a near-dry wick, refilling, waiting 10 to 15 minutes and taking dry puffs can sometimes rescue the taste. Know which situation you are in before deciding.

Whether you can unburn a vape depends on how badly the coil is damaged. A fully burnt coil — where the cotton has been visibly charred or where the harsh burnt taste appeared instantly and has not improved — cannot be restored. The scorched cotton permanently contaminates every subsequent puff and no amount of refilling, soaking or cleaning will undo the damage. A mildly burnt or near-dry coil — where you notice the taste becoming slightly harsh after running low on liquid — can sometimes be rescued by topping up the e-liquid, allowing 10 to 15 minutes for the cotton to re-saturate, and taking dry puffs. The distinction matters: attempting to vape through a fully burnt coil wastes liquid and makes every puff unpleasant.

Diagnosing Your Burnt Vape: Can It Be Saved?

Possibly rescuable: mild or near-dry burn

Signs: taste was fine until the tank got low, harsh flavour appeared gradually rather than suddenly, tank is now less than a quarter full, burnt taste is mild rather than acrid. Cause: the liquid level dropped below the wicking ports, partially drying the cotton. The cotton is not yet fully charred — it is dry. This can sometimes be reversed by refilling and allowing the cotton to re-saturate.

Not rescuable: fully burnt coil

Signs: immediate harsh burnt taste on a new coil (not primed), sudden acrid taste mid-session from chain vaping or high wattage, taste has not improved after refilling and waiting, visible dark brown or black residue visible on or around the coil wicking ports. Cause: cotton has been scorched. Charred cotton cannot be restored regardless of how much liquid is added. Replace the coil.

How to Try to Rescue a Mildly Burnt Coil

  1. Stop vaping immediately when you notice the first signs of a harsh or burnt taste. Every additional puff on a drying coil risks burning more cotton. The sooner you stop, the better the chance of recovery.
  2. Refill the tank to the maximum fill line. If the liquid level was below the wicking ports, the cotton was drying with each draw. Topping up submerges the ports again.
  3. Allow the device to sit upright and undisturbed for 10 to 15 minutes. Do not vape during this time. The cotton needs passive time to re-absorb liquid through capillary action.
  4. Take 3 to 5 dry puffs — draw on the mouthpiece without pressing the fire button. This draws additional liquid into the cotton through suction. You may hear a faint gurgling as liquid moves through the wick.
  5. Reduce the wattage to the minimum of the coil's recommended range before taking the first powered puff. Lower wattage puts less immediate heat stress on the re-saturating cotton.
  6. Take a single careful test puff. If the taste is clean and normal, the cotton has re-saturated and the coil is rescued. Continue vaping normally but be mindful of the tank level going forward.
  7. If the harsh or burnt taste persists after these steps, the cotton has been charred and recovery is not possible. Replace the coil.

Common Causes of Burnt Taste and How to Prevent Each

Tank running too low

The most common cause of burnt taste in established vapers. When liquid drops below the wicking ports, the exposed cotton dries with each draw. The fix for the future is never letting the tank fall below a quarter full. For most users this means topping up once or twice a day. Never chase the last drop — the final few puffs on a near-empty tank are always running slightly dry.

New coil not primed

A completely dry new coil fired without priming will scorch on the very first puff. This is the most wasteful form of burnt coil — a brand-new component destroyed before it has even started. The solution is always to prime: add drops to the cotton ports, fill the tank, wait five to ten minutes and take dry puffs before the first powered draw. See our coil priming guide for the full process.

Wattage too high

Running the device above the coil's maximum rated wattage vaporises liquid faster than the wick can re-absorb it between draws. The result is a dry hit. Check the wattage range printed on the coil body and stay within it. If you prefer more vapour and flavour at higher wattages, switch to a coil designed for that range rather than pushing an unsuitable coil beyond its rating.

Chain vaping without breaks

Taking rapid back-to-back puffs depletes e-liquid from the cotton faster than it can re-saturate between draws. Even a fully primed coil on a full tank will produce dry hits if chain-vaped intensively. Leave 20 to 30 seconds between draws during normal use, more during long sustained sessions.

Sweetener build-up gunking the wick

High-sweetener e-liquids caramelise on the coil and block the wicking ports over time. A heavily gunked coil cannot absorb liquid efficiently, effectively causing chronic partial drying even with a full tank. The flavour fades and harsh notes appear. Switching to lower-sweetener e-liquids significantly extends coil life. Cleaning the tank and replacing the coil is the only cure once significant gunking has occurred.

Coil reaching natural end of life

Every coil degrades over time through normal use. After one to two weeks the cotton becomes saturated with residue, the wire coats with deposits and wicking efficiency drops. Gradual flavour decline and increasingly harsh notes are the signal. The correct response at this stage is coil replacement, not attempting to nurse the degraded coil further. Replacing at the flavour-fade stage rather than waiting for full burn-out gives the best experience from each coil's lifespan.

Cannot be fixed

A fully burnt coil with charred cotton — no amount of soaking, rinsing or refilling restores it. Replace immediately.

Sometimes rescuable

A near-dry or mildly dry coil — refill, wait 15 minutes, take dry puffs. Works only if cotton has not yet fully scorched.

Prevention is best

Never let the tank drop below a quarter full and always prime new coils — these two habits eliminate most burnt coil problems entirely.

Can You Rinse a Burnt Coil?

Some sources suggest rinsing a burnt coil under warm water to remove surface residue. This can clear some of the caramelised sweetener gunk from a heavily gunked but not-yet-burnt coil, potentially extending its remaining life by a few days. However, rinsing does absolutely nothing for a coil where the cotton has been scorched — the charred cotton fibres are inside the wick where water cannot reach the underlying damage.

If you choose to rinse a coil, rinse under warm water, shake out as much moisture as possible and allow it to dry completely for several hours — ideally overnight — before reinstalling. A damp coil will produce spitting and gurgling. Never use cleaning agents or chemicals on a coil — residues from these would be inhaled with the next use.

The most important insight about burnt coils is this: the burnt taste does not arrive at the moment the cotton starts to scorch. It arrives after the cotton has already been degrading for some time. The first signal is not a burnt taste — it is a subtle flattening of flavour, a slight dullness where your liquid used to taste crisp and clear. If you replace your coil at this fading-flavour stage rather than waiting until you taste actual burning, you will enjoy noticeably better flavour from every coil throughout its life and will significantly reduce the number of coils you burn out unnecessarily.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you fix a burnt disposable vape?

Single-use disposable vapes were banned in the UK in June 2025, but any pre-ban stock or prefilled pod systems from legal post-ban devices with a burnt taste cannot be repaired. Prefilled pods are sealed units with no accessible coil. A burnt pod must be replaced. The device itself (the rechargeable battery unit) is not affected by a burnt pod — it can be used normally with a fresh replacement pod.

Why does my vape taste burnt even with a full tank?

A full tank with a burnt taste almost always means one of three things: the coil was not primed before first use, the wattage is set above the coil's maximum rated range, or the coil has reached the end of its natural lifespan from normal use and the cotton is saturated with residue. Check the wattage setting first. If the wattage is within range and the coil is not new, replace it. If the coil is new and was not primed, it is likely permanently damaged and needs replacing.

How do I know when to replace rather than try to rescue a coil?

If the harsh taste appeared suddenly and acridly — especially immediately on a new coil, or after a session of chain vaping — the cotton is likely fully scorched and replacement is the only option. If the taste appeared gradually as the tank got low and is relatively mild rather than sharply harsh, a rescue attempt by refilling and waiting is worth trying before replacing. When in doubt, replacement is the reliable solution and coils are not expensive.

Is it harmful to vape a burnt coil?

Inhaling vapour from a scorched cotton coil is unpleasant but the immediate harm is primarily the harsh taste and throat irritation. Consistently vaping burnt coils is not advisable — scorched organic material produces degradation compounds that are not present in clean vapour. If your coil tastes burnt, stop using it and replace it rather than continuing to vape through the unpleasant taste.
